God Is Big

The Bible reminds us that God created the heavens and the earth. As science has helped us to understand the vastness of the universe in ways that befuddle our human minds, God's awesome power is aptly summed up in the Psalmist's statement: "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?" The answer is God is mindful of us and does care for us, so any situation that may seem impossible to us is possible with God.

The Living Word of God

A reflection on the statement of Jesus that man does not live by bread alone but by the Word of God. Living by the Word of God begins with the reality of God speaking to us through the Scriptures (prophets, apostles) and through Jesus. We face a decision of whether we will listen to the Word God speaks to us, giving His Word priority over our own word, and leading us to obedience and action. Our obedient response to the Word of God is evidence that we have heard Him.

Notes from Joe Lieway's message:

Plague #1: Floodwaters of the Nile into Blood - This Plague is very important. The first plague was a judgment against OSIRIS, the god of the Nile, Isis, goddess of the Nile.
Plague #2: The Swarm of Frogs - This was a judgment against Heqet, the frog-headed goddess of birth. Instead of preserving life, the frogs died.
Plague #3: Lice/Gnats - This was a judgment against Seth the god of the desert. Unlike the previous plagues, the magicians were unable to duplicate this one, and declared to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God."
Plague #4: Flies - This was a judgment on either HATKOK, the wife of Osiris, and RA, who were both depicted as flies.
Plague #5: The Death of Livestock - This too was a judgment on the goddess Hathor and the god Apis, who were both depicted as cattle.
Plague #6: Boils - This was a judgment against several gods such as, TYPHON, Sekhmet, Sunu and Isis that were considered gods over health and disease.
Plague #7: Hail and Fire - This was an attack on SHU, the god of the atmosphere, Nut, the sky goddess, Osiris, the crop fertility god, and Set, the storm god.
Plague #8: Locusts - This plague was an attack on god, SERAPIA – the god who was considered protector of Egypt against locusts. The later crops, wheat and rye, which had survived the hail, were now devoured by the swarms of locusts. There would be no harvest in Egypt that year.
Plague #9: This was judgment against the sun god, RA, who was symbolized by Pharaoh himself. For three days, the land of Egypt was suffocated with an unearthly darkness, while the homes of the Israelites had light.

Grace in the midst of judgement: As an example of His grace, God warned Pharaoh to gather whatever cattle and crops remained from the previous plagues and shelter them from the coming storm. Verse 19 reads, “Quick! Order your livestock and servants to come in from the fields. Every person or animal left outside will die beneath the hail.” Some of Pharaoh's servants heeded the warning, while others did not.

God's Promise: Remember the Name

When life is hard and things aren't going like we expect them to, it's hard to remember God's promises and who He is: YAHWEH.

Resistance in the Face of Obedience

In Exodus 5 Moses finally confronts Pharaoh and tells him to let the Israelites go. Pharaoh does not respond favorably which came as no surprise. This demand to Pharaoh causes him to increase the demands on his Hebrew slaves. This message examines the idea of how we respond when we are obedient and things don't go as planned.

Birth In The Midst Of Despair

Pharaoh is growing increasingly concerned about the number of Hebrews in his country. His first plan of slave labor has no effect on the Hebrews, so he employs other means of population control, the genocide of Hebrew baby boys. In the midst of this terrible decree the baby boys are born thanks to the faith of two Hebrew midwives. And one special baby boy named Moses is born in the midst of the Pharaoh's sinister commands. In this teaching we learn from the faith of the characters as well as the plan of God in the midst of the evil intentions of man.
